Celebration of the International Seminar on CLIMATE CHANGE & PEACE

Barcelona, 2nd & 3rd November 2009

 

The 2nd and 3rd November the Foundation for a Culture of Peace organised the International seminar “Climate Change and Peace: The effects of climate change on global peace and security, and its humanitarian dimension” with the support of the Generalitat of Catalonia (Catalan Government), the Patronat Catalunya Món and the CADS (Catalan Advisory Council for Sustainable Development).

 

This meeting was held at the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC, the Institute of Catalan Studies), in Barcelona, within the framework of the celebration in this city of the last round of negotiations prior to the UN Summit on Climate Change that will take place in Copenhagen between the 7th and 18th December.

 

The seminar counted with the participation of experts and personalities of the highest level, among them, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General on Climate Change, Srgjan Kerim; the Vice-chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Prof. Jean Pascal van Ypersele; the President of the Foundation for a Culture of Peace, Federico Mayor, or the Special Representative of Denmark for Climate Change, Niels Pultz.  Representatives of other organisations, such as the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the UN University of Pace (UPEACE) or the Global Humanitarian Forum did also participate.

 

As a result of the different presentations made, as well as the discussions and debate held, it was decided the elaboration of a report together with a document with the conclusions and proposals for actions. These documents will be presented to the UN Secretary General, and other authorities within the UN system.

 

The opening of the seminar counted with the participation of personalities such as Federico Mayor, President of the Foundation for a Culture of Peace and former UNESCO Director General; the Vicepresident of the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya), Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira; and the President of IEC, Salvador Giner. At the closing session, the Regional Viceminister for International Relations, Roser Clavell, was also present as well as the Director of the Foundation for a Culture of Peace, Manuel Manonelles.
